For many years I worked in training Interior Designers to teach them how to sell more effectively. I, as a coach, focused on developing the designers’ soft skills so that they could leverage their strengths and expand their client portfolio.

They had all been chosen for the job because they were good at their design skills, i.e., they knew how to lay out a space harmoniously, how to mix colors and how to graphically represent a design proposal in a way that their client could visualize their space.

What was missing in most cases in the training of these designers, was the ability to inquire the client, with an active and empathetic listening, so that they could understand what this person was needing beyond the product they apparently needed. Ex: a sofa, a chair, a dining table, etc.

In all cases without exception, people who go shopping for interior design and decoration items clearly have an emotional purpose hidden behind those seemingly aesthetic and functional needs. This emotional purpose is what really motivates customers to make purchasing decisions and is what makes an interior design and decoration project successful.

It is a revolutionary approach but necessary in the world we live in today. Professionals can no longer think about success without thinking about helping the people they work for. Success must be linked to service. Learning interior design without considering the people who live there and their emotional needs no longer makes sense.

That was a concept that was valid at a time when productivity was the most important thing, products, image, trends, etc.

In the post-pandemic world we live in, people have very specific needs beyond aesthetics and functionality. Spaces must fulfill the emotional purpose of those who inhabit them and this is what we teach in our Interior Design Course Focused on  Human Needs of the House-Coaching™ Institute.
